Hamta Pass and Chandratal Trek

Himachal Pradesh

Durations5 Nights 6 Days

About your holiday

The Hamta Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas, offering a startling contrast in landscapes. Starting from the lush green Kullu Valley, you journey through dense forests of oak and maple, crossing glacial streams to reach the high-altitude Hamta Pass. As you cross the pass, the scenery transforms into the rugged, stark, and desert-like terrain of the Lahaul-Spiti region. The trek culminates with a visit to the ethereal Chandratal Lake (Moon Lake), a high-altitude turquoise gem surrounded by majestic peaks. This trek is perfect for those seeking both adventure and visual diversity.

Day 1: Arrival at Prini Base Camp (6,700 ft) – Reporting & Acclimatization

Arrive at the base camp in Prini, located near Manali. After reporting, settle into your accommodation and complete the registration process. The day is focused on acclimatization and orientation. You’ll have a briefing about the trek, gear check, and safety protocols. In the evening, enjoy a short walk around the base camp to get used to the mountain air. Dinner and overnight stay at Prini.

Day 2: Prini to Chikha (10,100 ft | 4 km | 3-4 hrs)

The trek begins with a short drive to the starting point. From there, you’ll trek through lush green forests and cross small streams. The trail is a gradual ascent that leads you to Chikha, a beautiful campsite located near a waterfall. The area is rich in vegetation and offers a peaceful atmosphere. Overnight stay in tents at Chikha.

Day 3: Chikha to Balu ka Gera (11,900 ft | 9 km | 5-6 hrs)

Today’s trek follows the banks of the river, with the trail becoming rockier as you progress. You’ll cross the river via a wooden bridge or by wading through cold glacial water. Balu ka Gera, meaning "Sand Bed," is a serene campsite located at the base of the Hamta Pass. It offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Overnight stay in tents at Balu ka Gera.

Day 4: Balu ka Gera to Shea Goru via Hamta Pass (14,100 ft | 7 km | 7-8 hrs)

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. You’ll begin a steady climb toward the Hamta Pass. Once at the summit (14,100 ft), you’ll be greeted with spectacular views of the Indrasan peak and the contrast between the green Kullu valley and the cold desert of Spiti. After spending time at the pass, descend steeply to Shea Goru, a campsite by the river in the Lahaul valley. Overnight stay in tents at Shea Goru.

Day 5: Shea Goru to Chatru & Visit Chandratal Lake (11,000 ft | 7 km Trek + Drive)

A gentle downhill trek from Shea Goru brings you to Chatru, the road head in Lahaul. From Chatru, you’ll take a shared vehicle for a scenic drive to the famous Chandratal Lake (14,100 ft). Spend time at the "Moon Lake," admiring its ever-changing colors and the reflection of the mountains. Later, drive back to the Chatru campsite for your final night under the stars. Overnight stay in tents at Chatru.

Day 6: Chatru to Manali via Atal Tunnel – Trek Completion

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Manali. The drive takes you through the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel, significantly shortening the travel time. Arrive in Manali by 4:00 PM, where the trek officially concludes. You can then proceed with your onward journey with unforgettable memories of the crossover trek.
